MISSISSIPPI STATE
Last year's eight win season and bowl victory was exactly was needed for coach Sylvester Croom. The school that gave him his historical chance extended the contract through 2011 after facing some tough scrutiny through his previous struggling campaigns. The West Coast offense has yet to be established in Starkville to the point where it can outscore opponents. QB Wesley Carroll showed promise while starting as a true freshman a year ago and his arm strength apparently has gotten much better this off-season. The depth behind him is non-existent so his health has to be a major factor. But the nation's 113th ranked passing attack of 2007 has a long way to go. Getting big play ability out of the RBs also has to be a big key. The 240-pound Anthony Dixon has power but the hopes in locating the lightning part of the attack will have to derive from the newcomers. The OL is sketchy since All-SEC guard Mike Brown was dismissed this spring, leaving only one returning starter lining up with the first team. The most notable loss on defense is All-SEC DE Titus Brown which now means two unproven players will have to man the outside of the DL. The LBs are solid led by Jamar Chaney in the middle. The nation's seventh rated pass defense returns an experienced nucleus of players including senior free safety Derek Pegues who is easily the best player/leader on this side of the ball. He projects as a top rated DB at the next level. The defense has carried the load since Croom arrived and this season is likely to be much the same despite hiring a new coordinator. Injuries and a lack of depth continue to make this the worst offense in the league. This team is eerily built the same as in the past. Eight wins are doable but so is a disappointing four-win possibility. Injuries would severely cripple the effort.

The Bulldogs have to throw the ball better this year. If not, they won't win eight games.
