South Carolina College Football Preview

SOUTH CAROLINA
STRENGTHS: The front seven on defense is a great place to start. Led by 250-pound All-
American linebacker Eric Norwood, this group will be tough to run against. Norwood is also set to
break the school's sack record. The 4-2-5 defensive scheme put into place by coordinator Ellis
Johnson proved to be more than effective last season. Stephen Garcia won't be an immediate
savior behind center for coach Spurrier, but he is starting to show the potential the head ball
coach saw when recruiting the Tampa native. His nifty feet also make him a dangerous ground
weapon.
CONCERNS: Same ole story for coach Spurrier, the offensive line is killing this program. This unit
will welcome back four different starters but continues to rank last in the SEC in both opening
holes for the ball carriers and protecting the QB. The ball carriers are very inexperienced and
losing TE Jared Cook early to the NFL does not help a receiving unit missing a star player. Two
new cornerbacks must step in for a secondary that lost its two best players (Captain Munnerlyn
and Emanuel Cook) as both left the program early for the NFL Draft.
PROGNOSIS: The Gamecock nation is still waiting on Steve Spurrier to deliver South Carolina to
the SEC Promised Land after going a meager 28-22 in his four seasons as the head ball coach.
Five new assistants were bought in this off-season in an effort to revitalize a lifeless effort at
times. Although the secondary is breaking in new faces, plenty of heralded talent is at the
coaches’ disposal and so defense should be the cry in 2009. Garcia has a bright future at QB if
he can stay out of trouble but until he gets some time to throw from this offensive line, he won't do
any better than his below average predecessors. The Cocks could use an eight win season to
boost morale...easier said than done.
PROJECTED RECORD: 6-6

Kentucky College Football Preview

KENTUCKY
STRENGTHS: Offensively the Wildcats welcome back nine starters. The best of them all may be
young sophomore Randall Cobb, who will line up predominately at receiver but also behind
center on an occasion as a dual-threat weapon. He gives UK the playmaker they need. The
running game has not produced the results that should be expected. Senior Alfonso Smith lines
up at tailback with 4.3 blazing 40-yard dash speed and the return of sprinter Derrick Locke
returning from a knee injury should bolster this rushing aspect. The true individual stars on this
team are on the defensive side. Linebacker Michah Johnson and cornerback Trevard Lindley are
veteran All-Americans.
CONCERNS: The hope for a better offense has to start with QB Mike Hartline, who has wrapped
up the starting role for a second season. His inconsistency and passing stats have been
detrimental to the ball club thus far. This defensive line was supposed to be one of he best since
head coach Rich Brooks took over before All-SEC defensive end Jeremy Jarmon was ruled
ineligible by the NCAA this spring for taking a banned substance, leaving only four returning
starters on this side of the ball. Outside of Randall Cobb, the receivers that were extremely young
last fall need to make some bigger strides.
PROGNOSIS: What is on paper does not always tell the tale. Kentucky lost a good many players
on the defensive side. However, this could once again be the strength of the team with several
players ready to step into the limelight. This will be an important factor as an offense with a good
big of experience is still lacking in the production department. If QB Mike Hartline does not start to
show major improvement, incoming recruits could replace him. Getting the ball into the hands of
electric Randall Cobb will be the priority. Expectations are much bigger now after three
consecutive bowl wins, this team is just as equipped as any of those three UK squads before
them.
PROJECTED RECORD:6-6

College Football - San Diego State Review

SAN DIEGO STATE
STRENGTHS: These receivers may be the deepest in the conference. Leading catcher Vincent
Brown is back as are two other returning starters while senior DeMarco Sampson was the
surprise standout of the spring. Sophomore Ryan Lindley has a bright future at QB after showing
plenty of promise a year ago. Combined with the talent running routes this could be a formidable
passing attack. The new blitzing defensive scheme should benefit the linebackers, which
possesses the most talent on this side. LB Luke Laolagi is primed to log over 100 tackles.
CONCERNS: The Aztecs cannot run and they cannot stop the run. This is not a physical ball
club. There are veterans returning in the offensive backfield but they were all a part of a group
that managed to average just 73 yards per game last fall (nation's third worst). The front seven on
defense returns six starters. However, much like the offense, SDSU has never been known for its
physical defensive prowess. Depth is extremely thin across the board and everyone will be
learning a new scheme.
PROGNOSIS: The Aztecs are in full rebuilding mode. Ball State coach Brady Hoke takes over
and his assistants now include defensive coordinator Rocky Long - 11 years as head coach at
New Mexico where his defenses were stellar, offensive coordinator Al Borges - former Auburn
play caller and former Cleveland Brown Brian Sipe coaches the quarterbacks. There is talent
here to spread the ball around via the air and the new 3-3-5 blitzing defense is going to help
improve a defense that has been on the downside for a long time. Improvements should be
evident rather quickly. However, this is the only school not to attend a bowl in the history of the
MWC. That won't change this season but they might surprise a few teams.
PROJECTED RECORD: 5-7

College Football - Colorado State Review

COLORADO STATE
STRENGTHS: Four starters return to bolster the offensive line, all of them are seniors. Receivers
Rashaun Greer and Dion Morton are both playmakers that will help a passing game still
searching for a quality QB. The most experienced unit on defense will be in the backfield where
all four starters return.
CONCERNS: The Rams will be breaking in a new QB and a new set of running backs. Fifth year
senior and first time starter Grant Tucker will handle the job behind center but coaches have yet
to give him the vote of confidence. Replacing talented Gartrell Johnson in the backfield will have
to be done by committee. The top defensive player, LB Ricky Brewer, is out for the season on a
"team rules" suspension and the inexperience up front on the defensive line is going to cause
problems.
PROGNOSIS: While the Rams got an important bowl victory last season, they now have to
reload at some of the most important positions. A new QB, a new set of running backs and a
completely rebuilt defensive line are huge areas of concern and will keep CSU out of the
conference race. The two aforementioned offensive holes left coaches scratching their heads all
spring. Luckily, the blockers up front may be the team's best unit. Getting off to a rough start won't
help build confidence as BYU, Utah, TCU, Nevada and Colorado dot the schedule before mid-
October arrives.
PROJECTED RECORD: 4-8
NEW MEXICO
STRENGTHS: Those 1,000-yard rushing seasons of the past were built around a strong
offensive line. Center Erik Cook is an All-MWC performer and there is enough talent around him
to keep the front line sound. The top three receivers return led by Chris Hernandez although none
of them put big numbers last season due to the QB inefficiencies. Both of the returning starters at
safety are seniors and will be called upon to keep the defense honest.
CONCERNS: QB play was horrid a year ago. Donovan Porterie threw for over 3,000 yards in
2007 and will return from a torn ACL that sidelined him in 2008. The QB plight is still unsettled
however as eight game starter Brad Gruner is in a heated battle with Porterie. With roughly three
starters back on defense the Lobos will switch to a 4-3 defensive scheme, which puts pressure on
a DL that is extremely short on experience and depth. Two new corners get broken in and will
require a ton of help from the veteran safeties.
PROGNOSIS: Dynamic offensive mind Mike Locksley from Illinois takes over in his first stint as a
head coach. All of the schemes on both sides of the ball will go through a major reconstruction
schematically. The offense will be a no-huddle spread attack and the defense moves to a
completely new scheme too. The days of a power running game are history and this team is
lacking top rated talent to make the transitions smooth. It will take a few seasons to haul in the
players Locksley needs to run his sets. The key for the present is finding a QB, which proved to
be the downfall of 2008.
PROJECTED RECORD: 4-7

College Football - Air Force Review

AIR FORCE
STRENGTHS: QB Tim Jefferson was tabbed the 2008 MWC Freshman of the Year and talented
tailback Asher Clark was the team's top rusher from the nation's No. 6 rushing attack. Both return
although Jefferson took time out from the off-season to concentrate on academics. Clark is now
being experimented at QB, his former position. Both give this ground attack solid wheels. The
secondary appears to be the strength of the defense. Senior Chris Thomas, the teams MVP last
fall, returns at safety as does starting corners Reggie Rembert and Anthony Wright. All three
linebackers are back in the fold to further enhance the back seven.
CONCERNS: The biggest question is up front on the DL where two quality bookends have
departed in Ryan Kemp and Jake Paulson. Getting pressure on opposing QBs won’t likely equal
the same positive results. The Falcons are also missing an experienced receiver despite the fact
the passing attack is only the last ditch option. Expect the ground game to continue to be the play
of choice nine times out of ten. One of the biggest losses is in the kicking/punting game where
two-year starter Ryan Harrison needs replaced.
PROGNOSIS: Air Force has nearly twice as many starters back as it did a year ago, but the team
is still fairly young. Most of the starters are freshmen and sophomores. A steady defense and
continued use of the running game is still the winning formula and so it should be no surprise that
head coach Troy Calhoun makes a bowl game for the third straight season.
PROJECTED RECORD: 7-5
BRIGHAM YOUNG
STRENGTHS: QB Max Hall is a legitimate Heisman contender, RB Harvey Unga is a former
MWC Freshman of the Year who is now healthy after a lesser sophomore outing and TE Dennis
Pitta may be the best TE across the national landscape. DE Jan Jorgensen is one the best sack
masters in the conference while operating under this unique 3-3-5 defensive scheme and all of
the linebackers return to the fold. The defense should be stiff.
CONCERNS: Only four starters return to the offensive side, which means there is sure to be
gaping holes. The first area of concern is at receiver where Mike Reed and Austin Collie are
chasing NFL dreams. All of the incumbents are short on quality experience. Also the offensive line
has to replace four starters. Replacing both starting safeties becomes the priority on the
defensive side. Projected secondary starters Brandon Bradley and Scott Johnson have been
battling through injuries and projected starting CB Brandon Howard has left the school for
personal reasons. Incoming JUCO transfers could be vital here.
PROGNOSIS: An undefeated season is out of the question. The Cougars open with Oklahoma
and gets Florida State two weeks later. With senior Max Hall behind center anything is possible
as Coach Mendenhall strives to keep pace with Utah and TCU in conference (they get both at
home). Keep an eye on TE Dennis Pitta as he could easily wind up the top TE in the 2009 NFL
Draft. The lack of playmakers at receiver and a newly formed OL could make the season
interesting at times against teams BYU is favored over. The defense is good enough to stuff the
ground game but keeping the passing yards down is going to be a difficult task with this
secondary.
PROJECTED RECORD: 8-4

The Badgers will be playing in their seventh straight Bowl game. But they are pups compared to the Seminoles, who will be playing in the post-season for the twenty-ninth year in a row! All that being said, if you are going to be on the right side of this one you better be privy to some unique perspectives because neither unit is on a par with better past editions. Wisconsin finished strong, winning three of their last four Big Ten battles and four of five overall and needed every one as that got them to a 7-5 record after a 3-4 start. Their only conference failure was a one point setback to Michigan State and during the four game span they rushed for an average of 229 per game while holding opponents to 82. Obviously they will try to control the ground and clock here. That might be easier said than done, however, as Florida State, who finished 5-3 in the ACC Atlantic Division (lost tie-breaker to Boston College), is ranked thirteenth in the nation in total defense. That defense is complimented by a balanced offensive attack, so controlling the clock may not come easy for the Badgers. Although Wisconsin QB Scherer has produced well over the second half of the season (close to 190 yards passing per), the game will still come down to the better production from either UW’s 14th ranked rushing game or FSU’s top-notch defense!

A pair of teams with 8-4 records will square off in this 1:00 pm (e) battle. But ask the fans of the Mountaineers how the season went and they’ll tell you 8-4 was a disappointment under first year HC Bill Stewart, who replaced Michigan bound Rich Rodriguez. On the other hand, the folks in Chapel Hill are very satisfied with the resurgence of the program under second year HC Butch Davis ! WVU might have the best impact player in QB Pat White, but their rushing game (average well over 220 yards per contest) far outpaces a so-so passing game. And defense was a huge issue down the stretch as they gave up 356, 346 and 474 yards in their final three games while losing the yardage war to South Florida and Pitt and barely winning that statistical battle to lowly Louisville . The Tar Heels gain their strength through the air, averaging close to 200 yards per contest while gaining about 120 on the ground. NC will also be looking to regroup a bit as they lost 2 of their last 3 (beating Duke in their final game) and were outgained 466-203 by NC State and 336 to 285 by Maryland . Texas (-35.5) leading 42-9 scored a TD with 2:13 remaining in the game to get the cover (49-9). The Longhorns out-gained Texas A&M 536-245 where the Aggies had -24 yards rushing. The Longhorns were 14-17 on 3rd down while A&M was 4-14.

Florida Atlantic (-5.5) trailing 50-36 late in the 4th quarter, scored their 3rd TD in the quarter with 2:08 remaining and another with 8 second to go in regulation to tie the score at 50. The Owls then got the win and cover in OT (57-50).

In other action:

Mississippi State ’s offense, & defense for that matter, forgot to show up vs rival Mississippi where the Rebels won handily 45-0. State had 8 first downs, 37 total yards

(-51 rushing) and punted 12 times.

Bowling Green had 534 total yards to 196 for Toledo in the Falcons 38-10 victory.

BG had 30 first downs to the Rockets 13.

Boise never had to punt in their 61-10 thrashing of Fresno .

New Mexico State ’s only score was a safety early in the 4th quarter. The Aggies had only 156 total yards (-7 rushing) in their 47-2 loss at Utah State .

Georgia Tech took to the ground while Georgia went to the air with the Yellow Jackets game plan getting the win 45-42. Tech rushed for 409 yards and just 19 passing while the Bulldogs had 407 yards passing to 81 rushing.

After last week’s 6 points, Tulane offense has been held to 7 points or less 3 times this season. The Green Wave averaged less than 17 points per game and somehow only lost by 14 to supposed #1 Alabama 20-6.

In their warm-up for the SEC Championship, Alabama held rival Auburn to 8 first downs and 170 total yards. SEC (Champion) Florida tuned up for their match-up with 45 points and 502 yards on a rain-soaked sloppy field.

The Volunteers defense showed up for the 2nd week in a row holding Kentucky to 10 points and 193 total yards.

It took Notre Dame’s offense (?) 3+ quarters to pass midfield on their way to a 38-3 loss at Southern Cal. The Irish had 4 first downs and 91 total yards.

In probably the most misleading score of the year, Arizona State beat UCLA 34-9. The Sun Devils had just 122 total yards (UCLA 306), 10 first downs (UCLA 18) and 50 plays to the Bruins 79. Arizona State did not have an offensive TD scoring 4 times on turnovers; 17 yard fumble recovery and 3 interceptions of 38, 100 and 45 yards for TD’s. To their credit (?), the Sun Devils’ offense did convert on 2 FG’s.

I know Texas is on the road but Kansas is not the team of last year. Texas should man handle these guy even if they are on the road. Unless they have a handg over they destroy Kansas this weekend.

Did you know . . .

Late Cover . . . Temple (-4) scored 2 TD’s in the 4^th quarter, the last with 1:51 left to push the side. To add insult to injury, the Owls had just 143 total yards in the game.

One would think that opposing teams would have a clue but apparently not when they face Air Force (6-2). The Falcons were 1-3 for 1 yard through the air but still beat New Mexico 23-10. Same story against Southern Utah 8-12 for 75 yards (AF 41-7);

vs. Wyoming 3-4 for 15 yards (AF 23-3), vs. Houston 0-7 for 0 yards (AF 31-28); and

vs. San Diego State 5-7 for 72 yards (AF 35-10). Of course it didn’t hurt the Falcons chances when they returned a fumble 96 yards for a TD at the end of the 1^st quarter.

The game-day move against Boise (-8 down to -7) didn’t fare too well as San Jose State had a total of only 207 yards losing 33-16 at home. The Spartans scored their 1^st of 2 TD’s on a 62 yards interception return.

Texas Tech QB Harrell was 34-42 for 386 yards and 5 TD’s in his warm-up for the Longhorns Saturday.

Oklahoma (where’s the defense?) won and covered (58-35) against Kansas State but allowed the Wildcats to out-gain them 550-528.

Louisiana Tech came up with just 152 total yards in their loss to Army 14-7.

Navy took one from the Air Force playbook beating up on SMU 34-7 without trying a pass. The Midshipmen had 404 total yards (all on the ground) while holding the Mustangs to 8 first downs and 144 total yards.

The big move on Michigan went down as rival Michigan State (Michigan State -5.5 down to -3), fresh off their embarrassing showing against Ohio State the prior week, scored 2 TD’s in the 4^th quarter to win on the road 35-21. Michigan State out-gained the Wolverines 473-252 after getting only 240 yards vs. OSU.

Georgia ’s 2 interception returns for TD’s were the difference in their 52-38 win at LSU.

Bowling Green gained only 168 yards but covered the 6.5 losing 16-13 at Northern Illinois .

In the battle of winless teams in the Big 12, Texas A&M won and covered at Iowa State 49-35. These 2 teamed up for 1083 total yards (Cyclones 574-509). Iowa State had 34 first downs and never punted while the winning Aggies had 27 first downs but found the time to punt twice.

Alabama got their defense back in order stopping Tennessee 29-9 allowing just 173 total yards.

The Irish became the 7^th straight team to beat the soon to be Tyrone Willingham’s former team 33-7 as the Huskies totaled only 124 yards in their latest joke of an effort.

While the stats didn’t show it but Arizona hung tough against Southern Cal covering the 14.5 points but couldn’t get the job done losing 17-10. Perhaps their 188 total yards was the problem.

Undefeated Tulsa (8-0) pounced on Central Florida 49-19 as the Golden Hurricane tries to make a case for a BCS Bowl appearance. Unfortunately the Division I team that they’ve beat are a combined 17-39 and only one team has a winning record (Rice 5-3).
